1898

Wilhelm Köppern acquires the factory located since 1836 near the bridge spanning the Ruhr in Hattingen; operation continues under the name of ”Rhd. Berninghaus Nachfolger Wilhelm Köppern”.

1902

W. Köppern supplies a briquetting facility to the Wiesche coal mine with a roller press; the diameter of the rollers was already 1000 mm.
1907

KÖPPERN broadens the range of product applications to include the briquetting of ores.
1913

W. Köppern exports a roller press for the briquetting of hard coal to England.
1916

KÖPPERN supplies roller presses for the size enlargement of cement raw meal.
 
1926

After the death of the company founder his son Leopold Köppern and son-in-law Otto Schäfer take over at the helm and continue operations under the name Köppern & Co. KG.
1935

For the first time KÖPPERN uses large antifriction bearings in the press roller suspension system.
1943

The premises are overflooded by a tidal wave caused by the bombing of the Möhne river dam but production is resumed shortly after.

1951/1952

Following the death of O. Schäfer and L. Köppern their sons Heinz Köppern and Helmut Schäfer take over.
1954

KÖPPERN builds the most modern hard coal briquetting plant for the Rosenblumendelle coal mine where 6 roller presses with a capacity of 500,000 tons per year were are installed.
1956

KÖPPERN resumes exporting activities by supplying roller presses to India and the USA.
1959

KÖPPERN supplies roller presses for magnesite briquetting.
1962

KÖPPERN supplies roller presses for the compaction/granulation of potash.
1963

KÖPPERN supplies roller presses for sodium cyanide briquetting.
1965

Introduction of the electrochemical machining (ECM) process to produce briquetting molds.
1971

KÖPPERN supplies roller presses for NPK mixed fertilizer compaction/ granulation.
1973

KÖPPERN supplies roller presses for hot briquetting of direct reduced sponge iron (FIOR process); various roller presses some of which are complete briquetting systems followed for the MIDREX process (1984), HYL process (1990), FINMET process (1997) and LURGI-CIRCORED process (1997).
1975/1978

Patents are granted for KÖPPERN segments.
The KÖPPERN hinged press frame is patented.

1981

The KEI subsidiary is founded in the USA.
1985

KÖPPERN supplies roller presses for FGD gypsum.
1987

KÖPPERN roller presses are developed for comminution of cement clinker.
1988

This year marks the end of the hard coal briquetting era in Germany; KÖPPERN supplies the last roller press for hard coal briquetting to the Niederrhein coal mine.
1993

Foundation of the KAT subsidiary in Leipzig as engineering company handling projects for the construction of entire plants.

The MKV subsidiary is founded in Venezuela.

 

1996

The KMA subsidiary is founded in Australia.

 

1997

KÖPPERN secures the biggest individual contract in its history:
12 roller presses and systems for the hot briquetting of approx. 2 million tons/year of sponge iron.

The KMS subsidiary is founded in India.


1998

KÖPPERN developes and successfully applies the HEXADUR® wear protection system for the surfaces of high-pressure grinding rolls.
1998

KÖPPERN’s 100th anniversary:
- still family-owned
- located on the same premises
- long tradition of roller press production


2002

Köppern moves operations to a site formerly occupied by a Hattingen steel mill.
2003

Köppern Entwicklungs-GmbH is founded in Hattingen as engineering company dedicated to the development and manufacture of new wear lining concepts.

 

2004

KAT moves to Freiberg

Köppern´s test facilities are transfered to Freiberg and operated in cooperation with the technical university Bergakademie Freiberg.

 
2005

Mr. Christopher Schäfer becomes a management partner. Thus the Schäfer family takes responsibility within the company in the 4th generation.

 

2006

Foundation of Koeppern China Holding and establishment of an office in Beijing.
